CHAPTER ELEVEN

Kent had made himself at home at The Rose Inn—a little too much if you asked me.

When I’d get up for my morning coffee, he’d already be sitting with Mom in MY seat, laughing and chatting.

If I went outside to talk to Gavin while he worked in the yard, there would be Kent, sitting at my usual spot on the bench, petting Curly. The traitor dog would melt into his lap.

After a couple of days of dealing with Kent being everywhere, I decided maybe I would take my morning coffee at the coffee shop. Maybe that would give me some time to keep my ears open and listen to the local town gossip about what happened with Catrina. I figured it couldn’t hurt, and neither could a large latte.

Still half-asleep, I tossed on a hoodie and headed out to my car, thankful it wasn’t blocked by Gavin’s car. I didn’t want to wake Mr. Snorey pants, nor did I want to bump into Kent on the way and be forced into conversation. It’s not that the guy wasn’t nice enough, but a girl needed her space.

I yawned as I approached my car, spotting something white on the windshield.

Oh no, was the woodpecker back? What was he eating for him to leave that big of a dump on my car?

But the closer I got, I noticed the white thing blowing against the breeze.

Weird.

I hadn’t had a flyer on my window since I lived in the city, and it seemed like every marketer thought it was a great idea to put their advertisements there.

Pulling off the sheet of paper, I had to blink once, then twice as I rubbed my eyes, making sure I was reading it right.

STOP LOOKING INTO CATRINA’S DEATH. OR YOU’RE NEXT.

It was in big, bold, block letters as if whoever had wrote it was trying to hide their hand writing. The hairs on the back of my neck prickled as I glanced over my shoulder in each direction.

Who was up this early to put this on the car? It wasn’t damp, so it couldn’t have been the night before, or the morning dew would have gotten to it.

Was someone still lurking around the corner? Waiting for me? I widened my eyes, looking into the back seat of my car, making sure no one was hiding. I immediately jumped in the driver’s seat, turned on the car, and peeled out.

My heart raced as I kept looking into the rearview mirror for any cars following me on the way to the police station. I didn’t even bother getting the coffee first, though I probably needed it, I was running off adrenaline as I pulled into the front of the local police station.

The brick building was built right at the end of one of the bigger neighborhoods in town. One would have to peek over the fence and actually read the metal sign announcing “Willow Cove Police Department” to know it wasn’t just another ranch-style home.

My compact car probably didn’t even get in the yellow parking lines as I skidded to a stop next to one of the patrol cars.
